Academic Council Committees

Main content start

The Senate of the Academic Council discharges its academic and research policy responsibilities in part through seven standing Academic Council Committees. No item that is properly the business of a committee may come to the Senate without first being heard by the appropriate committee. Common committee business includes:

  • Reviewing undergraduate and graduate programs
  • Setting research policies
  • Standards and policies for undergraduate admissions
  • Graduate and undergraduate academic policies
  • Computing security and infrastructure
  • Exceptions to academic policies

Academic Council Committees (ACC):

Senate Standing Committees

There are three standing Senate Committees: the Steering Committee, the Committee on Committees and the Planning and Policy Board.

Steering Committee

The Steering Committee (StC) of the Senate sets the Senate agenda, confers degrees for the Summer, Autumn and Winter quarters, and serves at Administrative Sessions of the StC to review undergraduate and graduate programs on behalf of the Senate. StC members are elected each year by the Senate.

Committee on Committees

The Committee on Committees (CoC) nominates faculty to serve on Academic Council, University and Board of Trustees Committees as well as the Judicial Board and Panel Pools and any ad hoc search committees as requested by the Provost or President. With the approval of the Senate, the CoC also writes and updates the charges to the Academic Council Committees.

Planning and Policy Board

The Planning and Policy Board (PPB) consists of the current Senate chair and the previous two chairs, plus six Academic Council members elected by the Committee on Committees in consultation with the Steering Committee. The committee is "a keeper for the faculty's vision and mission for the university ... analyzing broad issues that require faculty attention, arranging means for addressing those issues, and setting priorities among them."
